The Southwest’s springs, rare in the region, were prized as life giving sources by early peoples. Walter Hough notes that pueblos formed near springs, which offered drinkable water year round amid desert sands, fostering religious reverence and offerings to water deities among the Pueblo and other cultures. The New York Tribune commentary suggests an unconscious human tendency to worship unseen powers behind springs.
