Harvest Festival Days Opens As Monticello Auction Near
The Harvest Festival Days in Monticello features a three day event November 2 to 4 with stores offering bargains. The GMC Monticello Dollars auction concludes Saturday at 2 p.m. near the Community building, with nineteen prizes public and twenty two sealed bid items. Bids must be received by 5 p.m. Thursday at the Hetzler Copely insurance office. The display prizes are at K and P Chevrolet Olds. A bank will convert large bills to smaller denominations for bidders using Monticello Dollars. The small steam engine owned by Justin Hingtgen of La Motte will be among attractions.

Stores close for Veterans Day in Monticello
Most Monticello stores will close all day Saturday and Saturday evening November 11 on recommendation of the Greater Monticello Committee. Friday evening November 10 hours will remain open. The American Legion and VFW drill team present a Veterans Day program with a parade at 9 30 a.m. from Central School. Dale Greenawald to speak at a flag raising west of the Community building after the parade. A steam engine exhibit by C. H. Hingtgen features a four ton engine among 16 total from 1896 to 1924. He runs a crating business using steam to cut about 40 000 feet of lumber weekly for Deere, International Harvester, and Cuckler.

Expect Record Turnout in City Election Tuesday
Able bodied men and women on direct relief in Jones county will now earn their way by working for relief. The policy, approved by the board of supervisors, sets one dollar per hour credit and assigns male workers to county engineer Claude Hamlin. Over 300 families received surplus commodities at the courthouse last Friday with all welfare families eligible.

An elderly Hopkinton resident, Vincent Miller age 81, was struck by a hit and run driver near his home Saturday evening. He suffered multiple injuries including a broken hip arm pelvis and head laceration and was taken to University Hospitals in Iowa City. Sheriff George Ponsford leads the investigation as witnesses Bert Fear and sons found him in the street.

Youths Charged With Car Theft in County
Two teenagers from Fort Worth and Chicago were charged with interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle after wrecking the car two miles west of Wyoming. Walter Malone, 18, and Albert Edmonds, 17, were turned over to U S marshal at Cedar Rapids. They admitted driving the stolen Chicago car hitchhiking from the crash site near Ana mosa. The escapees had been seen by Sheriff Dreibelbis and Deputy Robertson before their arrest. In Monticello, Tom Ring and Robert Starks were fined for hubcap theft from George Bohlken's Scotch Grove garage. a minor was sent to juvenile authorities.

Monticello voters will go to the polls Tuesday to elect city officials for the next two years. Three full tickets and three independent candidates are in the running. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting places cover ward one Great Plains Supply ward three Matthiessen Auto & Supply Co. and Monticello Community building with ward maps on page B-3. The new council will take office Jan 1 for a two year term. Incumbents include Mayor H Hoag and councilmen Miller, Miller, Sims, Hearn, and Kuriger with Hearn, Roy Miller and Dave Miller seeking re election. Olin and Onslow each have eight and twelve candidates respectively. Wyoming slate unopposed. Onslow lists twelve candidates.
