A digest of nationwide disasters crimes and legal shifts including hangings in Alabama and Wisconsin, fires in Boston Santa Monica Eau Claire and Wilkesbarre, floods and frost damages, murders and conspiracies in Illinois Alabama and Indiana, court verdicts in Chicago and Rockville, and notable institutional changes such as Hartford Seminary opening to women.
Catherine A. Brouco widow of a famed Ohio governor died in Cincinnati on the 23rd. Charles Clendenning oldest Allerheny County resident died in Pittsburgh aged 101. Judge H. J. Albert, possibly the oldest Odd Fellow in the U S, died in Warsaw Kentucky aged 79. Laura Brineamay, deaf dumb and blind from age two, gained fame through Dickens in his American writings.
Obituaries and notices list several deaths including a Boston woman noted for intelligence and a Pennsylvanian pensioner from the war of 1812. Public appointments by President Harrison include B F Gilkerson as Second Comptroller and Roger C Spooner as Consul at Prague. Also recorded are a hundredth birthday celebration in Little Falls and other civic acknowledgments.
The 22d report that Horrenz Lepuc of Montreal learned she inherited 4 400 000 from M Hedell in France. Other items note Ottawa establishing a Grand Army post, China beheading, ship collisions near Montreal, and disasters across Europe and North America.
The Chicago grand jury indicted Detective Daniel Coughlin Patrick O Sullivan the ice man and Frank J Black alias Woodruff for complicity in the murder of Dr Cronin. A cyclone at Clements Kansas killed seven and destroyed many homes. Also indicted were ex treasurer Louis Constans for embezzlement 35000 dollars. Albert Wilson killed his wife then shot himself in Evansville Indiana. Genera J A Aucmn and ex Senator Thomas Platt to spend the Alaska summer. Drum retired from army service aged 64. Dr Carlson and others killed themselves in Denver. Illinois Legislature adjourned sine die. A Havana coal oil explosion killed a woman two daughters and a colored boy. Mrs Randolph Bradt killed two children in Brenham. A Yakato Akita fire in Japan destroyed over a thousand houses. Voight brewery in Detroit sold for 950000 dollars. Mrs Morziz Corwin divorced her seventh husband. Irving Clift House burned in Honesdale. Daniel Murray crushed to death in Lima. Russian police uncovered societies seeking czar assassination. Jones barn burned in Anderson. Rhode Island Legislature in Newport elected Republican officers after no election.
The body of Dr. P. H. Cronin, Irish agitator and editor, was found in a catch basin on Evanston avenue Chicago. Police believe a brutal murder tied to Irish society factions and alleged embezzlement exposed by Cronin may have prompted the crime.
Brooks and Wells boot and shoe manufacturers of 107 Bedford Street report failure with liabilities around 80000 dollars and assets near 90000. The company runs a 400000 dollar yearly business on about 50000 dollars capital, with a Westboro factory noted.
William Hempker of Dundee and a boy named Frank Hintze were instantly killed when a building under construction collapsed on them in Exar Illinois on Wednesday afternoon as they moved a born vehicle.
A Kansas cyclone near Clements in Chase County reports Captain Brown and his daughter dead. His wife gravely injured and son hurt. six to seven others feared dead as wires fail to transmit details. Pantle, a stock train conductor, witnessed a square cloud demolishing several homes and a railroad crossing, with crews gathering for aid. Separately, a fierce Lake Ontario gale threatens ships with barges ashore and crews lost. Wellington life-saving station assists as three barges break up near St Peter’s.
The Right Worthy Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Good Templars began its biennial session in Chicago at the First Methodist Episcopal Church. Delegates from England Scotland Ireland Denmark Sweden India New South Wales and South Africa attended. The organization reports 750000 members worldwide and strong finances. It is the largest international temperance body with over 100 grand lodges and 10114 local lodges, promoting total abstinence and prohibition.
