Monticello NHS Initiates Nine Members in Ceremony
The Monticello chapter of the National Honor Society initiated nine new members last Wednesday in a Poplar Heights ceremony. About 90 society members and parents attended the initiations and dinners. Special guests included Supt. and Mrs. John Messerli and several other couples. Initiated members were Marilyn Brashaw, Doug Cheney, Paul Clark, Bob Durst, Barbara Grief, Linda Haag, Scott Hornstein, Kay Nelson, and Craig Thompson.

Students Run Park Concession for Vocational Training
Monticello high school will operate a park concession stand near the swimming pool this summer as part of a pre career program. Four students will be paid hourly wages plus a share of profits under manager Dave Messerli with supervision by Supt. John Messerli and Principal Stephen Williams.

Memorial Day observance planned in Monticello
Memorial Day will be observed Monday in Monticello with a parade starting at Central School and marching to the post office then to Sacred Heart and Oakwood cemeteries. The Monticello Drill Team, high school band, Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and veterans groups will participate in services at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The day includes store closures and no mail service.

Kent Knopp and Jana Rhatigan were named valedictorian and salutatorian of the Monticello high school 1971 graduating class. Kent, son of Mr and Mrs Jack Knopp, will attend Cornell college Mt Vernon next fall. Jana, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Rhatigan, will attend the University of Northern Iowa.
