Senator Allison cites a one million dollar daily war cost while Jefferson warned Britains harm potential. The piece mocks fake war dispatches and outlines Linn county nominating plans and attorney candidates with Cedar and Linn county contenders named.

The Fiftieth regiment of Iowa volunteers broke camp at Des Moines last Friday and sailed for Tampa Florida where they will be quartered near Cuba. They are commanded by Col. Jackson a longtime National Guard member who rose from private to commanding officer. The regiment was warmly greeted at each station during its Iowa transit.

John Emerson, Herman Weyer, and Zeller's farm also suffered severe losses with bridges demolished. Estimated property damage runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Col. C. D. Hayden of Dubuque is appointed to a post in the internal revenue service. He will join Inspector Carson of St. Louis and receive a salary of 1800 dollars a year.
L W Will and Fannie Hickman wed at Cascade last week. Memorial address planned at Edgewood on Decoration Day. Several school appointments and re-elections announced including Olin and Steamboat Rock. Bell overalls workers in Dubuque struck over wage cuts. Jail improvements and sidewalk finance plan adopted in Anamosa. District court records list numerous civil and criminal actions with verdicts and alimony orders. Military promotions include Major C D Ham of Dubuque as lieutenant colonel. Prohibition mass convention called for Hopkinton on June 1. Wolves threaten Tama county pigs. bounty posted.
President McKinley will touch a button in Washington to set in motion the Trans Mississippi Exposition machinery at Omaha on Wednesday June 1. Beforehand he will greet the audience by long distance telephone read by Gov Silas A Holcomb. An elaborate program is planned and a large crowd is expected.
Kline and others request that Phis be set for hearing at Chambers in Marion Town on six days notice by either party before Judge Wim G. Thompson. The case John D. Perry versus James R. Nichols is in default with trial to court and decree as prayed. Mrs M M Kelsall versus B C Mackrill continued.
The Wyoming Journal reports a horse thief escaped with a mare from Dan James’s premises west of town. After a dawn dash through Monmouth and Hales, he rode the mare into Olin and drove toward Mineral Point church before continuing southeast. The sheriff pursued from Jackson County. the thief was still at large by press time. The note adds the thief was captured near Sabula the following day and shot after resisting with a corn knife and butcher knife.
