Debates in the U S senate on the tariff bill filled the day with an iron ore free list amendment defeated. The House passed an amendment repealing a statute about sergeant-at-arms absence. A Elkhart Indiana paper mill went to a receiver with heavy liabilities. Western Pennsylvania flood continued with ten lives lost and $1.5 million in Williamsport alone. In CatcaGco on May 18 Judge Chetlain fined Election Commissioners P. H. Keenan A. W. Hutchings and Henry Schomer $1000 each and ordered jail until the fines are paid for defying orders to allow grand jury inspection of ballots from the April election in the Twenty second precinct Twenty ninth ward. Chief Clerk W. A Taylor was dismissed from the case as he lacked authority over the ballots. An order of commitment was issued directing Sheriff Gilbert to arrest the contumacious officials.
Dr Henry Meyer found guilty of murder in the second degree for poisoning Ludwig Brandt in New York May 19. Jury verdict imposes life imprisonment with a motion for a new trial filed. Prosecutors allege Meyer killed Brandt for life insurance proceeds shared with Meyer's wife.
Rome May 18 Bishop John P Newman will preside over the annual Methodist Episcopal church conference in Italy to be held in Milan from May 24 to 29. Reports will cover church school social and temperance issues. New York bank reserves declined by 1,870,300 and surplus by 444.50 in the weekly statement.
