Disaster on Lake Huron Sinks Merrick and Claims Five Lives
The steam barge R. P. Ranney collided with the Detroit schooner Merrick ten miles from Presque Isle at 2:30 am Friday, sinking the Merrick and killing five aboard. Only two Merrick crew survived, Capt. Rusho and William Goodfriend. The Ranney arrived in Cleveland with the news and bears a large hole in its port bow.

The Right Worthy Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Good Templars plans a major biennial convention in Chicago May 20 to 28 at Sirat M E Church with 700000 members represented worldwide. W Turnbull of Scotland will serve as Right Worthy Grand Chief Templar. Delegates come from American nations and England Ireland Scotland Denmark Sweden India New South Wales South Africa and others. A memorial service at Rosehill Cemetery for John B Finch will close the gathering on May 30.

At War ham Station Tennessee a passenger train hit a wagon carrying farmer George Wright his wife and children. all were killed and the wagon was torn apart. A separate Michigan Central collision near South Denver killed Joseph Bechard and his horse. Near Windsor Ontario Mr Hutchins and team were struck with severe injuries. In Fernwood Pennsylvania an express train struck a market wagon at Fulton station killing James McCartney and his grandson James Cumberland along with both horses.

Seventeen railroad workers—two white and fifteen black—entered a burning Stone River bridge to dump water from the tender. The span collapsed, sending the engine and men into the river fifty feet below. Two whites were injured and three black laborers were killed with six others wounded.
