Des Moines reports Governor Cummins naming the Iowa delegation for the St Louis Exposition. He also selects a town commission and outlines plans for the Iowa exhibit, outlines land price notes, and lists delegates for the American Congress of Tuberculosis and grain weighing reforms.
Commander George Metzger announces the twenty eighth annual Grand Army of the Republic encampment to be held in Des Moines May 20 to 22 1902 with a full schedule of council meetings receptions parades camp fires and reunions. Diverse speakers include Gen Dodge Gov Van Sant and other Civil War officers. The note lists related educational conferences and upcoming state conventions in May.
The ninth annual meeting of the Corn Belt Editorial association will be held in Le Mars on Thursday and Friday May 22. Speakers include E. W. Caldwell mayor of Sioux City Welli ger of the Tribune Sioux City J E Jerome of the Vidette Storm Lake and G L Caswell of the Review Den ison. Editors and their wives will be banqueted.
Frank Leveler a 72 year old farmer perished trying to save a buggy from his burning barn two miles northeast of Newton. His body was found mutilated among the debris with severe injuries. The Leveler family is under arrest and the stepson Henry Myers confessed to starting the fire.
A gunman fired at Dr. E B Walston, a leading Des Moines physician, over alleged romantic ties to his divorced wife Mrs Hammond. The shot missed by an inch. Jesse Hammond surrendered at a police station amid prior divorce tensions.
A cyclone struck Bayard Van Wert and Weldon demolishing many buildings and damaging property. Bayard saw two large grain elevators toppled and homes collapsed. Van Wert endured burned houses barns and uprooted trees with injuries reported. Weldon experienced a demolished farmhouse and three injured children. There were no confirmed fatalities.
W. B. Mahannah once an express messenger was arrested in Burlington by government secret service men. He is believed linked to a $20,000 package from a Chicago bank. Arrest followed his attempt to redeem partially burned funds.
Washington weather bureau reports rainfall ends drought in Towa with grain and grass improving and potato planting underway. Large areas ready for corn, planting in southern half. soil condition at peak, fruit blossoms early, some damage from high winds.
Morris Shea, co defendant with William Smith in the alleged murder of Charles Johnson at a Des Moines saloon two months ago, was discharged after the court ruled the joint trial evidence did not justify detention.
Roy McNamara, 18, who vanished from Grennell six weeks ago, was located by his father Rev. J. McNamara of Onawa working as a machinist in the Big Four railway shops. The youth refused to return home, saying he enjoyed the machinist’s work.
Enos Riley aged 82 a pioneer of southwestern Iowa and former prominent figure was killed near his Avocn home when struck by a Rock Island passenger train as he started across a bridge and failed to see the approaching locomotive in time.
Reports from Colfax Dubuque Iowa City Ottumwa and surrounding areas detail fatal injuries from farm work and a windstorm damaging a church and school. Political notes include D B Henderson’s unanimous renomination and a convention for a colored women’s club federation. A cyclone at Farmington and various accidents, attacks, and a prison release are also noted with local names and places.
Iowa Rural Free Delivery to begin July 1 with multiple routes. Grinnell in Poweshiek County gains four carriers over 981.44 miles serving 2,145 people. Chester Kellogg Orillia Delaware Delhi Earlville Estherville Manchester and others add carriers and new route lengths. Several post offices to be discontinued including Monti and Broadway.
Mayor James Brenton of Des Moines proposes two drastic steps to deter tramps. He would buy two bloodhounds to pursue criminals and use jailed vagrants to work a 195 acre farm set aside for a cemetery through 1925. Prisoners would be employed on streets parks and city beautification projects, supplementing free labor rather than competing with it.
Harold Bowman of Des Moines secured a Columbia University fellowship worth more than 500 dollars. The award followed his theses on ultra vires tort liability and the Iowa Board of Control. Bowman, age about 26, is a Des Moines native and a former Ann Arbor graduate with multiple degrees.
The governor, on the recommendation of State Veterinarian P. QO Ka, appointed a list of assistant veterinary surgeons. Named are Henry E. Talbot of Des Moines, John J. Repp of Ames, D. E. Grain men say all old grain is at market and trading stalls until after harvest. Prices have surged, moving the entire stock and driving lots of grain into Iowa cattle due to beef price highs.
Ed Davison of Pekay was convicted of assaulting 12 year old Natie Gallagher and sentenced in Ottumwa to eight years in the penitentiary by Judge Vermillion. A motion for a new trial was overruled. The case aroused strong county feeling with talk of lynching Davison at his February arrest.
Adjt. Gen. Byers will issue an order for the annual camp of instruction in rifle practice. It will be held at Cedar Rapids from May 26 to 29. Col. W. E. H. Morse of Algona will oversee the camp as state inspector. Four members from each guard company will be detailed to receive instruction.
After Alaska Gold W I Wanna and his wife depart Town Falls for Nome to operate in Dorado Arctic season. Mr Hanna returns to manage Cape Nome mining claims. A census bulletin notes 124 25 tobacco manufacturing establishments nationwide, up 31 percent in ten years, 142 277 wage earners, up 12 percent, with product value $295 076 546.

Cummings of New York died at 10 15 PM at Church Home and Infirmary pneumonia following an operation His wife and cousin Charles H Cummings were at his bedside Born May 15 1842 in Conklin Broome County NY he worked as a printer and editor in New York joining Horace Greeley s circle He served in multiple Congresses and represented the Tenth District of New York in the Fifty seventh Congress.
The weather bureau reports heavy rains in Missouri and upper Mississippi regions, drought persists in upper Ohio and mid Atlantic, with cool growth in Rocky Mountain and north Pacific states. Corn planting advances in Illinois Missouri and Kansas, winter wheat improves in Illinois Missouri and Ohio, spring wheat seeding nearly done with slow growth, oats prospering in south while Nebraska shows poor stands.
A detachment under Gen. Yuan Shi Kai of Chi Li province reports 60 soldiers killed while trying to quell an anti indemnity uprising near Henan. Yuan organizes three regiments to destroy towns around the fighting area.
Washington May 8 Representative Foster All introduced a bill to place all livestock on the free list. Representative Naphen Mass introduced a resolution alleging public lands are leased to meat trust members and directs the secretary of the interior to provide information on such leases.
Rome reports the king has pardoned the United States cruiser Chicago officers who were imprisoned at Venice. They have been released and given their liberty.
Philadelphia April 30 Jacob Schaeffer, champion billiard player, defeated Julius A Dorgan the Hungarian expert in a match and broke his own world balk line record with a 148 point run Tuesday night in 18 inch balk line billiards.
A Missouri prohibition party call announces a June 19 state convention at Clinton to nominate officers. Delegates will include both men and women.
Washington May 2 the president through Secretary Root orders the court martial of Maj Edwin Glenn Fifth Infantry cited as a participant in administering the water cure in testimony before the senate Philippine committee.
Prince Frederick William George Ernest of Prussia died in Berlin on Friday evening. Born in Dusseldorf in 1826, he was a member of the Prussian royal lineage.
The Iowa state board of control purchased 3806 acres at two tracts near the Clarinda facility for 27276 dollars, at 75 and 96 dollars per acre. Plans include power houses at Davenport and Fort Madison, a laundry and cottages, sewage plants, and new buildings totaling about 100000 dollars. The board also toured southern Iowa institutions and Galesburg Illinois, praising Mount Pleasant and Glenwood facilities and noting lace making at Glenwood and strong staff demand at Council Bluffs College.
Mrs. Anna Edworthy of Des Moines, a leading figure in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, plans a year and a half campaign to persuade the Thirtieth General Assembly in 1904 to establish a reformatory for females at the abandoned home for the blind in Knoxville. She seeks support from legislators over two years.
Superintendent H K Kratz of Sioux City reports that more than 2000 Town teachers will attend the National Education Association meeting in Minneapolis this summer. Initially estimates ran higher than 1000, now at least 20 from each county are expected to join. A five hundred thousand dollar mining land deal near Ottawa aims to merge properties in Monroe county. J E Evans of Aynes, a wealthy mine owner with options on most local coal land, faces a bid from eastern capitalists seeking to purchase his holdings. Evans names $500 000 as the asking price.
Booker T. Washington has been secured to deliver the graduates' address at the state university in June. He will visit Des Moines to lecture near that time. In the fall Grover Cleveland and James Bryce the economist are expected to speak to state university students.

River men cheer as heavy rains raise Mississippi water and restore navigability at La Crosse Wisconsin.
