Sunny spring days across Jones county find farmers busy from sun up to sun down. Extension director Joe Legg said Tuesday most plowing is done and many farmers continue with field work and planting efforts.
Births reported from John Mc Donald hospital include a girl on May 1 to Mr and Mrs Rex Rickels of Monticello and a boy on May 4 to Mr and Mrs Joe Mauser of Bernard. Marriage licenses listed for Edwin Sneakka Cedar Rapids and Charlene Simmons Marengo and others. New cars and trucks registered with the Jones county treasurer include entries for Haugh Anamosa Beckman Monticello Schemmer Anamosa Tuel Monticello Corey Anamosa Hartwig Olin Bader Monticello and others.
Glenn Van Etten of Manchester has been hired as special education director by the boards of education in Jones, Delaware, Buchanan and Clayton counties. He replaces Harry L. Stover, who has resigned after about nine to ten years in the four county program.
Mrs. Eliza Schoon of Amber reports 68 years as an Express reader since 1897 after renewing her subscription to the Monti cello Express. The paper invites readers to prove they have a longer subscription record and asks to hear from any person who can claim the longest tenure.
Ten troops from the Hawkeye Area council will take part in Scout-O-Rama at Monticello city park and Youth Center on Saturday May 15. Exhibits run 2 to 4 30 p m and 7 to 9 p m with Cub Boy and Explorer Scouts participating. Monticello scouts camp Friday night and present a two hour show Saturday afternoon and evening. Local scouts will sell advance tickets.
Monticello High School hosted the Camera Club third annual photo contest with five divisions. Dave Luck won first in portraits and sports and studies, earning best of show from among division winners. other division champs included Brenda Page, Dave Bohlken, John Vanourny, Tom Haas, Dan Bohlken, and Harry Boots. judges were Ken Kephart, Dave Tschantz, and Ed Schneiter.
City of Monticello issued permits for four new houses in April including B Carroll Jr at 835 Ridgeview Road a 3 bedroom home costing 13000 dollars and Iben Construction at 835 Southhaven Dr a 3 bedroom home costing 13000 dollars plus a 96 by 28 duplex for Lawrence Mausser at 205 South Haven Dr costing 20000. Flyers Inc received a permit for a new hangar at the municipal airport estimated at 3500 dollars.
Jones County district court saw three new civil cases with two filed Tuesday. Joseph and Mary Pederson sue Clarence E. Prult for 23582 for a July 19 1963 Monticello collision injuring Mary Pederson. Pederson seeks 20000 for injuries and 3582 for vehicle damage plus loss of Mrs Pederson's services. The case also claims Negligence by Prult.
Monticello Community high school groups entered in a Class B music contest at Monona. The top rating went to the band mixed chorus and girls glee club, while the boys glee club received a two rating. Rankings announced by Ray Stumbaugh.
The annual high school jazz concert planned for Thursday May 13 at 8 p.m. will feature vocalists soloists and twirling numbers with a hint that the Beatles may appear. Proceeds from advance tickets go to the American Youth Band fund aiding Steve Miehe on his Europe tour this summer. A separate Iowa road contract awarded to W Hodgman and Sons for 1.454 miles of paving near Anamosa at a low bid of $56 702.
Construction crews push road work as the east west road to Amber nears completion. Preparation on the north south corridor is underway with paving expected to start in a day or two. See photo on page A-4.
County engineers and board members from 13 eastern Iowa counties attend an open house in Jones county to view slip-form concrete paving on the Amber road. The event, hosted by Quad City Construction Co and the Portland Cement Association, includes a noon lunch at the Legion hall and highlights the season’s first Iowa concrete paving project.
The Monticello Jaycees road e o winner advances to the state contest in Keokuk with entries opened for the May 16 local event at City Park. Contest features a written test and driving skills, with a plaque for top scorer. Entry blanks from Freese Motors. open to teens with licenses and clean record since Feb 5. State prizes include watch, $100 cash, and trip to Washington DC. national prizes include scholarships up to $2,000 and a 1965 Comet convertible. Public welcome. no admission charge. A 16 year old involved in a minor crash during a driving test received a warning.
Mrs. Kittie Ruth Felker starts as Express Wyoming area correspondent after nine years with the Wyoming Journal. She succeeds Mrs LeRoy Bartels who resigns. The Bartels family plans to move around June 1 to Independence where Bartels will teach industrial arts for the 1965-66 school year.
