The twenty third annual State Convention of the Republican party of Iowa will meet in Des Moines on Wednesday, June 11 1879 to nominate a Governor Lieutenant Governor Supreme Court Judge and Superintendent of Public Instruction. Delegates are allotted per county and by votes for J A Hull in 1878 totaling 722. Death of Hon Rush Clark Fifth District Congressman
Rush Clark former Speaker of the Iowa House and congressman from the fifth district died in Washington last Monday from congestion of the brain. A Pennsylvanian by birth he would have turned 45 on October 1. He was admitted to the Iowa City bar in 1853 and lived in Iowa City practicing law. Clark served in the Legislature 1860 to 1864 including two years as Speaker, joined the Governor’s staff 1861-62, was a State University trustee 1862-66, returned to the General Assembly in 1876, and was elected to the Forty-fifth Congress and reelected to the Forty-sixth.
