Faith and iron rails shaped Monticello parish history
Irish Catholic pioneers helped build the Dubuque-Southwestern railway and Monticello’s Sacred Heart church. Leaders including Fathers Cogan Walsh O Dowd O Connor Tobin McCormick Hauck Lorenz and others guided church growth from 1868 through the 1960s, with a new twin spired church in 1914 and a 1922 school later expanding to a high school before its 1969 closure.
