Mayor Jack Bruce files a $2,000 suit against a Des Moines serum company and the veterinarian who treated his hog herd after 96 hogs died following serum administration. He seeks to determine if hog cholera or the serum caused the deaths and whether the treatment was properly carried out.
Des Moines reports the twenty first annual Iowa Independent Telephone association meeting where speakers say rates are unlikely to rise but the public will be educated to value telephone service. Companies will work to counter future legislation raising operating costs.
Tattoo marks identified the decomposed body as Charles Brown, a prosperous traveling salesman. Brown, ill and delirious, climbed from a hotel window, slid down a fire escape, and leaped into the Mississippi River west of Davenport in January.
Col. R. H. Spencer aged 75 becomes father of twin boys in Algona. Spencer is a Civil War veteran and former Union officer. His wife, Emily Bohannon, is daughter of a Confederate veteran, adding historical contrast to this surprising family milestone.
Three prisoners confined in Webster City city jail sawed their way out and escaped. Held for petty crimes, they were suspected of belonging to an organized gang of thieves active in the area. This marked the first jail delivery in years.

Electric interurban service between Muscatine and Iowa City began with a two hour schedule. The route runs west to Montezuma and What Cheer passing through Iowa City Lone Tree Nichols Muscatine Riverside Kalona Wellman Webster South English Keswick Thornburg What Cheer and Montezuma.
During March farm transfers in Marshalltown totalled 1.59 million dollars in land value with nearly 750 thousand dollars borrowed on farms and new mortgages amounting to 712 thousand dollars. Old mortgages were assumed as part of the transactions.
E W Stafford of this city likely the oldest Odd Fellow in the state died in Minnesota while visiting his daughter. A lodge member since youth he was 83 at death and had worked as a contractor in earlier years. Local Odd Fellows conducted the funeral.
In Crawford county during the last two years 120 permanent bridges and culverts have been built. A meeting of township trustees and road workers saw a three to one vote in favor of bonding for completing the bridge work and a two to one vote in favor of bonding permanent grading.

Dubuque reports Mrs. D B Henderson widow of Col D B Henderson former speaker of the house lies in hospital with injuries from a fall at her home. She fractured her right hip and sprained her back, and her condition is critical.
A pet cat woke Mrs. C. A. Koonse, alerting her to a blaze at the Koonse home in Clarinda. The fire forced Mr. and Mrs. Koonse and three roomers to flee with only a few clothing items, while the cat is credited with saving their lives.
Keokuk Philip Nickel, saloon keeper, fined 50 dollars and costs in district court for selling a glass of beer during the repeal test. Appeal bond set at 150 dollars. Nickel found guilty by a jury on an indictment returned by the grand jury January 19.
Panora reports the dry goods store of H. L. Moore robbed of clothing and silks worth 800 dollars. Authorities believe the robbers fled in an automobile and have found no trace of them.
Humboldt resident M. T. Rogers prominent local businessman was struck and killed instantly by an M and St Louis passenger train while crossing railroad tracks near his gravel pit two miles south of Humboldt. His car was struck as he left the pit.
Tama Iowa jurist I C Huber has been recommended by the senate judiciary committee for the U S district attorney post in Hawaii. The action signals a move to fill the Honolulu office with a candidate from Tama.
Mrs. Anne Dykeman of west of Pella died when a kerosene explosion occurred as she tried to start a fire. Her young daughter was fatally injured. Eight other children upstairs escaped unharmed.
Charles Marshall, employed on the Ed Hudson farm south of Chariton, was killed when dragged into a corn shredder by a runaway team. His body was terribly mangled in the accident.
Des Moines reports an official plan to study causes of 14 to 16 year olds leaving school for work. Ellen M. Rourke will conduct the state wide inquiry under the labor commissioner, aiming to uncover underlying reasons beyond mere employment figures.
Police and county officials report grave desecration at New Sharon. The casket was broken and body disturbed after which the grave was refilled. Relatives, granted disinterment, found the violation. No theft occurred and guards have been posted at the cemetery.
Iowa Supreme Court rules that a betrothed partner afflicted with a fatal or incurable disease is not bound to marry. Nancy Bowie of Carroll County sued the Oldfield estate for $10,000 and for $3,975 for housekeeper services. the court allowed the latter claim but dismissed the breach of contract portion.

London reports that army officers in Sin-Kiang conspired to harm the governor. The governor learned of the plot and invited ten conspirators to dinner where they were severely harmed.
New York dispatch reports Boris Schumacher arriving from Petrograd stated Russian losses since the war began total 2,542,639. He supplied the figure to The New York United States dispatch.
Washington March 24 internal revenue agents will raid tobacco dealers in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia before week’s end officials said. Authorities will search premises for contraband or improper tax practices as part of enforcement push.
King Ferdinand has returned to Sofia from Vienna where he fell ill with bronchitis during a recent visit. Reports from Budapest confirm he is back in the Bulgarian capital.

Police found Mrs. Bessie Horan and Joseph Dranee shot to death in Dranee's room in Chicago. Authorities believe the woman killed the man and then fatally shot herself.
Reuters dispatch reports a Russian warship sank the steamship Esperanza off Kali Akra in the Black Sea near the Romanian coast. The crew was captured.
Washington March 25 The Hay army reorganization bill passed the House 402 to 2. It authorizes a regular army of 140000, a federalized militia of 120000, reserves from retirees, a 50000 reserve officers corps, federal pay for National Guard members, and mobilization planning for war. Gardner amendment adopted 204 to 198. Kahn amendment to raise to 220000 rejected 191 to 213.
A major blaze in Augusta Georgia burned for nine hours destroying more than 700 houses, six business blocks, and two schools. The fire, driven by a gale, wrecked about 1.25 square miles and left roughly 3,000 people homeless. Loss estimated at 7 million dollars as utilities collapsed and blocks along Broad Street burned.
New York detectives sought Dr. Arthur Warren Waite in the death of John H. Peck, a Grand Rapids, Michigan druggist. Waite was found in a stupor after self-administering an opiate to induce sleep. District Attorney Swann announced plans to charge Waite with first degree murder.
