Shaw Murder Case on Trial in District Court

Judge Ellison presides over the trial of Robert Shaw for the murder of Karl Emerson. The case stems from an 1916 incident in Rome Township where Emerson struck Shaw with a hoe and Shaw allegedly struck back, with the defense claiming self defense and the state arguing the fatal blow occurred after the fight. A prior jury deadlocked in November 1916, and irregularities in juror drawing led to delays and a new panel of 40 jurors being empaneled, with more jurors summoned to complete a 12 juror panel.
