House kills compulsory primary bill in vote

The House defeated the compulsory primary election bill by a 49 to 51 vote yesterday. Judge L. G. Kinne was re appointed by Governor Cummins to the board of control. The Vinton Eagle endorses M. A. Buchan of Grundy county for clerk of the supreme court and urges Fifth district support if he is named by Grundy. N S Ketcham of Marshall county announces as Republican railroad commissioner candidate at the state convention next summer. Hull wins Polk county delegates amid a fierce contest with Judge Prouty. The Times Republican praises Ketcham as a long time, trusted Marshalltown businessman. A baby board of control for three educational institutions is viewed skeptically. Senator Gorman of Maryland is urged to lead the Democratic congressional committee, a move some see as not signifying Bryan’s decline.

Peet Appointed County Supervisor in Jones County

Mr E G Peet of Greenfield township is named by the auditor recorder and clerk to fill the Jones County supervisor vacancy caused by Brainard's death. The appointment lasts until after the next election. Peet has nine years of service and is expected to aid county interests. Several strong men were proposed for the post. The same issue discusses a House Judiciary Committee substitute on the tax ferret law reducing arrears to three years and requiring the treasurer or his assistant to be county residents for eighteen months prior.

A man in Adams county chose a city paper over his county paper for value. He bought a so called patent fire escape advertised to be sent on receipt of one dollar. He sent the cash and soon received a copy of the testament.

Reports from Cedar Rapids and Monticello detail proposed Milwaukee Road adjustments between Farley and Cedar Rapids. Plans include looping Farley passenger service via Monticello to Calmar, extending Monticello Davenport service to Farley, and adding evening and morning trains benefiting Hopkinton Fayette Strawberry Point Arlington and other towns with Cedar Rapids also anticipated to gain.
