Tragic Mountain Ride Ends in Death of William Moore
A deadly accident in Richland township near the Jordan and Maquoketa rivers claims the life of 20 year old William Moore after a ride with friend George Hines. The men sought a shortcut through rough terrain and fell from a cliff about twenty feet high into a cobbled ravine. Hines escaped with hand lacerations, found Moore and his horse dead at the base, and a party later recovered the bodies. Moore, once a student at Monticello Graded Schools, was beloved and mourned by his family and community. Grave services were led by Rev. Nf. Adams of Bowens Prairie amid widespread sorrow.
