Funeral Services Held Sunday for Mrs. Willard
Mrs. Cliff Willard 79 a lifelong Hopkinton Buck Creek resident died Friday March 11 after a two week illness from a stroke. She was born Ethel Squires July 4 1875 and married Cliff Willard November 21 1899. Surviving are her husband a son Roscoe and sister Mrs Lucy Winch all of Hopkinton. Funeral was at Buck Creek Methodist church Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev David Saunders assisted by Rev H E Morrow and Rev R V Porter. Burial followed in Buck Creek cemetery.

The Iowa Braille and Sight Saving school of Vinton will present a variety program in the Monticello high school auditorium Thursday April 14 under Lions club sponsorship. Proceeds go to a Lions club fund aiding blind persons. Admission 50 cents adults 25 cents children. Wives of Lions club members and participants in the club minstrel show attended a gratitude dinner at the Community building Monday. Polio Vaccine Series Planned for Jones County Students
About 80 percent of 939 first and second graders in Jones County are slated to receive a three shot polio vaccine series starting in April. Centers will be in Monticello Anamosa and Wyoming with transportation arranged for students from rural schools. The program is sponsored by the Jones County Medical Association and funded by the National Foundation for Poliomyelitis via the March of Dimes.

Monticello public school students joined an instrumental clinic at the University of Iowa on Saturday March 12. Supt Boyd Shannon and Music Director Ray Stumbaugh attended with two Monticello quartets the trombone quartet Carl Egger Bonnie Schneider Bill Jansen Robert Martin and the french horn quartet Judy Sutherland Deloris Folken Sharon Freese Shirley Hanken. Dubuque Driver Hurt In Mishap Near Here
Pierre Lee Gombert 26 of Dubuque suffered minor bruises when his 1952 Oldsmobile went off Highway 1351 four miles north of Monticello and overturned into a ditch. He said a passing car forced him off the road as it cut back into the right lane. The car was a total loss. Gombert is brother of the late Claire Dee Gombert of Anamosa who died in a truck car crash near Monticello on December 26.

Lightning Strikes Tree Near Lovell School Prompting Short Vacation
A bolt of lightning split a tree near Lovell No. 6 rural school causing a noon recess while Maquoketa Valley Rural Electric workers cleared debris. Seventeen pupils were affected as two nearby trees were cut down and heat was lost during repairs. no injuries reported.
