How To Lay Out Contour Guide Lines On Farms
Farmers contoured nearly three quarters of a million acres last year and will exceed that as they push production. Iowa State College extension soil conservationist Lester E. Clappo advises using clear days to lay contours with a carpenter level and staking from eye level, two levels down for each subsequent line. Contouring raises corn yields about 5 bushels per acre and soybeans 2, saves fuel and time, and minimizes soil loss while conserving topsoil. Cooperation between neighbors is encouraged to accelerate the work.
