Lincoln's finances and the paradox of wealth in his era
A column discusses Abraham Lincoln's modest finances at his inauguration and after, contrasting an ideal of public service with the belief that money is incidental to living. It notes his Springfield house, Iowa land, and a remark aiming for ten thousand to twenty thousand dollars, framing wealth as secondary to character.

Historic Hadley Deliverance by General Goffe in 1675
In Old Hadley New England a 1675 Indian attack disrupted worship. A grave elder, later identified as General William Goffe, commanded the town’s defense and routed the attackers before slipping away. Goffe, a regicide sought after by bounty, found shelter with Pastor John Russell and died several years later. A state road now passes the site where he rallied Hadley’s settlers.
