At 3 a.m. a fire engulfed a farm home near Orange City in Sioux County. Mr. Reinders and family fled barefoot in 20 degree below zero cold as bricks from the chimney collapsed. The elder Reinders woke to flames and woke his son and family before the roof gave way. a defective chimney is blamed.
A freight train at McGregor in Clayton county derailed seven loaded cars after a box car wheel broke near the depot. The impact splintered an oil tank car frame but no injuries were reported. Cold weather is blamed for the wheel failure.
Mrs. Minta Eddy Nielsen of Audubon Iowa discovered a 25 cent currency note dated 1874. The bill, created by acts of 1863 and 1864 for Civil War emergencies, features a portrait of Robert Walker who served as Secretary of the Treasury in 1845.
Lake View town council in Sac county paid Nuehring Brothers three female red deer for 15, to be placed in the city park. The farm near Lytton has disposed of its entire herd, with some animals butchered for venison for larger returns than sales on the hoof.
A homeless man in Oskaloosa Mahaska County seven months ago sought shelter at a Salvation Army rooming house. He borrowed 35 dollars to buy fruit stock and built a thriving local business, proving the proverb that self help brings rewards.
A severe cold snap in Calmar Winneshiek County caused pavement to bulge on the town square and snapped an electric light cable beneath. The outage lasted two days and nights leaving Calmar without electricity.
F. C. Novotny near Jerico Harrison county fed a pig for three months on buttermilk and shelled corn to yield 41 gallons of lard. Charlie Stebe of Eldora Hardin county wore a special $60 set of teeth for tough foods. After eating a fine steak he dumped the pail into the fire with the teeth still inside, destroying them.
Miss Edna Rubsam found the coal shed emptied of about 1.5 tons at a country school near Sibley in Osceola county. Officers traced a truck to the scene. padlock forced and coal tossed by hand, leaving slack. This marks a second similar theft at the same school this winter.
Montgomery county newspapers report a suit against a man named Fred Smith for 1850 damages from an auto accident. The Griffithville resident is unsettled as he has never been in an auto crash and is not the defendant in the suit.
Mrs. Ernest Baker reports ten chicks hatched from 12 eggs on her farm in Bremer county. The brood emerged January 27 and 28 in a stolen nest. Despite below zero weather, the chicks thrived and began to show wing feathers early in what is the start of the hatching season.
Centerville Ap panoose county railroad yards faced heavy coal thefts all winter. A trap left a car of coal for thieves. A group of youths and girls in boys clothes loaded coal into carts while overseers watched. parents reportedly pushed them to steal for fuel.
