Widening Stree ts Slated in Express Annexation Pics

Express photos show three of four streets in an annexation widening program. Grand Street will be expanded on the south side from Cedar to Sycamore and on the north side from Cedar to beyond the Express office. The same street will gain south side widening from Sycamore.

Jones County District Court Hears Five Criminal Five Civil

Five criminal cases and one civil suit were heard with one divorce granted. Hawkeye Oil won 164.23 against Mike Rouse plus 5 percent interest from 1968 and costs. Wallroff and Hopker faced driving while intoxicated charges with fines, suspensions, and license revocations. Kephart received a one year reformatory sentence for escape. Divorcees included Kiple and Orris, with child custody and support awards. Additional suits filed include Me Jon, Inc. and Brokaw Surge Service judgments.

Band concert to feature soloist Gordon Goettsch

Gordon Goettsch will be featured in a trombone solo Swing Low Sweet Chariot at the Monticello band concert tonight. The program begins at 8 in the band shell south of Monticello and includes Discover America Theme Escapade selections from The One and Only Genuine Family Band Vaquero March If They Be Near Mission Im possible Theme Arkansas School Bands March Lovin Things Rush Street Tarantella Minnesota March and Star Spangled Banner.

Streets Work and Annexation Motion Approved

The council approved street improvements including curb and gutter on Cedar Street and resurfacing on Cedar Second First and Maple to Main. Northwestern Bell was granted underground cable installation before street work. Councilman Don Kaiser moved the annexation program as presented and modified by the council in a special meeting June 19.

City moves toward annexation plan with public hearing steps

The council approved moving forward with annexation steps on a unanimous roll call. Kaiser will set a hearing date, the engineer will draft a plot, and the attorney will prepare a resolution. Mayor Norlin and council members Arduser Durst Hargrave Monk attended, with acting clerk Mona Yousse and city engineer Paul McMahan.

Two Cascade youths charged with interference of road sign

In Anamosa Justice of the Peace court Tim Otting and Nick Folk, both of Cascade, were charged with interference of a road curve sign after the structure was broken off and cast into Lost Creek. A preliminary hearing is set for June 27 at 10 a.m.

Jones County Installs Civil Defense Indoor Warning System

A county wide civil defense indoor early warning system has been installed in Jones County. Central unit at the sheriff's office in Anamosa with relay at Monticello radio center activates local units in schools hospitals nursing homes and industries. Receivers in Monticello schools John McDonald hospital Johnson Nursing Home and local firms. Alerts via radio signal with five minute follow up from home base. System available for purchase to the public.

Real estate values rise in Monticello and countywide

Final real estate assessments released by Jones county assessor L. T. Lorenzen show Monticello at 4,502,425 up 158,320 from 4,344,105. Anamosa at 3,924,378 with other towns listed. township totals reach 25,263,934. Assessed at 27 percent of actual value.

Delay in welfare funds pushes July warrants to July 9

Jones county Welfare Dept spokesman said new fiscal year assistance funds will not be available until after July 1. Most recipients should expect July warrants on or about July 9. Food Stamps will be sold July 9 and 10 in addition to regular dates.

The Monticello Express will publish on Wednesday instead of Thursday due to the 4th of July holiday. Subcribers will receive papers earlier and staff are asked to submit copy and ads one day earlier than usual with deadlines set for departments and advertising Monday.
