Hendricks Comments on Tilden Declination and 1876
Indianapolis June 12 The Hon. Thomas A Hendricks discusses Tildens letter of declination saying the news surprised him little from prior visits he knew Tilden would stay out of politics He notes a strong Democratic demand for the old ticket and says election to the Vice Presidency would have been a people’s rebuke to a perceived wrong. He adds he would not have sought the office eight years ago or now unless it meant a clear public rebuke.
