Prune Climbing Roses After They Bloom

Horticulturists at Iowa State College advise pruning climbing roses after blooming not in spring. Remove old wood to strengthen new shoots that bear next year’s flowers. For trellised plants, cut some old shoots at ground level and replace with new growth, preserving vigorous branches. Climbing hybrid teas require thinning weak wood while keeping growth that creates the desired display.
