A Saturday night cyclone devastated Arkansas City Arkansas. Churches and ten stores and homes were wrecked. The Arkansas elevator roof was blown onto tracks destroying freight cars. Kate Walton 15 and Tody Walton 9 were killed. Mrs Walton injured and Lizzie Walton hip damaged. All are colored.
The State Board of Health reports Johnstown and nearby areas in excellent health with no epidemic risk. Dr. Groff notes river water now purer due to mud and sand, while lists of recovered bodies and extensive destruction at Hurlbut House site are recorded. Governor Beaver pledges $1,000,000 for relief and a state commission to oversee cleanup starting Wednesday.
Maggie Thompson, a missing child, was found murdered in the cellar of the Leuth family near the Thompsons in Cleveland. The head was severed and the body mutilated. the Leuth family were arrested and police continued the investigation.
