Monticello area residents host visitors from Dubuque Anamosa Chicago and Cascade. Local merchants promote sale prices on shirts waists hats and muslin underwear while seed and furniture suppliers advertise new stock and favorable guarantees.
The week features social events and visits from Magpoketa guests, weddings, and community notices. Local figures including Mr. and Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. Schodde, and Miss Lena Hanken appear among school, church, and business updates with farm, weather, and entertainment notes throughout Monticello and surrounding areas.
Mr and Mrs C W Hosford Jett travel to Center Point to attend the funeral of Grace Lewis aged 13 who died of typhoid pneumonia and funeral is planned for tomorrow. Mrs Marion Rastede sues Cedar Rapids street railway for damages claiming illness from a seat incident. Mrs Charles Dickinson visits from Oregon and learns of sister Ray Delano's death formerly Ray Lawrence who lived in Monticello years ago.
District court enters third week with Judge Remley presiding over Lane versus Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company. Trial centers on negligence at a crossing near Anamosa with defenses of contributory negligence and intoxication. Court calendar notes many civil and probate actions including divorces, estate processing, and appraisers for numerous estates.
Asa Phelps is credited with a lively chase last Thursday afternoon as one of his livery teams ran from the barn hitched to a double seated buggy. The team dodged many vehicles along Flist Street and Sycamore and North Cedar Streets, until stopped with only slight damage to buggy or harness. C. J. Northrop learned this week of his father E. E. Northrop's death in Summerland California after a long period of ill health. E. E. Northrop had long resided in Maquoketa before moving to California about ten years ago. A county picnic of the Modern Woodmen of Jones County will be held at Monticello Park on July 4 with a $50 baseball budget and games. the local camp of 190 members leads the preparations and invites Woodmen and families to attend.
The council met in an extra session with seven members present. Minutes approved. Weighmaster Abel reported May receipts of 714 drafts and other items totaling 17.95 after a 15 allowance. Street funds and numerous bills were approved. Treasurers’ balances and funds were listed. petition to enlarge the old well referred to a committee for feasibility. Meeting adjourned.
