W. W. Gentry Circus Faces Hard Luck in Monticello
The W. W. Gentry circus struggled financially in Monticello last Monday taking in 3.59 in the afternoon and about 20 at night. After paying a 10 license and 10 rent the show had little to pay wages or transportation. A dispute over missing animals led to a back salary dispute and an attachment settling for 76 before the troupe moved to Maquoketa. The sheriff intervened as Maquoketa merchants faced advance payments and a late trek caused delays. The circus departed without arrest or jail hold, noting no zoo space for elephants.
