Edinburg and the Long Drive to Anamosa Jones County Seat Battle

Early settlers in Jones County faced a brutal struggle to locate the county seat. Commissioners chose Edinburg near the county center, but only a few buildings rose before the site failed. A log courthouse served, with Judge Wilson from Dubuque presiding. William Hutton built a shop and a makeshift hotel, yet no officers resided there as clerks lived elsewhere. By 1846 legislative action began to shift the seat toward stability in Anamosa.
