The Fourth of July display near the swimming pool drew hundreds of spectators with strong community support for the organizers Legion and VFW plus the Lions Club and GM C for financial aid. A bigger show is planned for next year.
Monticello Express serves Monticello and Jones County as a weekly paper since 1866. It publishes Mondays and Thursdays and is a second class mail matter. Advertising represented by national and state services with varied subscription rates by county.
Denis Donovan stationed at Fort Chaffee Ark called home to his parents Monday. A group of servicemen including Jim D Bender Richard Wright Paul Bohiken Don Cruise Chub Warner Grant Adamson met at the camp and celebrated the Fourth of July together.
The 260 acre Naylor Farm operated by Rex Brady near Onslow was featured as Foto No 46 on July 2. Marilyn Larkey identified the picture. Brady runs 100 acres of corn 40 oats baled 10 hay 20 head Brown Swiss cattle 20 Hereford cows 300 hybrid hogs. The Bradys moved from Center Junction to Navier farm 3.5 miles northeast of Onslow. They have one child Susan. A free 8 by 10 inch photo is available at the Express office.
The Cass Corner Chums held a cookout in Anamosa park on June 11 with committees handling food. Janice Kula and Sharla Pillard led a team demonstration on preparing food for a cookout. Ann Porter spoke on a review of the Basic Seven and Jann Mayberry presented on John Peel. The club’s annual garden tour occurred on June 28.
On June 23 garden projects in clubs were visited starting at Cletus Goedkens. The group met at Leo Holub’s home for a Look out. Prairie Pals judges awarded Pats Kula first and Peggy Loughren second while Judy Goedken led with Gloria in second place.
Kromminga finished second in the Prairie Hill Be Natural club event with judges Minnie Rickels and Mrs. Joan Weber presiding the tour.
The Castle Grove Fortune Finders 4-H club held a June 25 campfire cookout at Diana Schatz home with fifteen girls cooking hamburgers and stew over buddy burners. Thirteen mothers attended the meal and heard talks on a Girls 4-H convention trip, canning equipment, salads contributions, and cooking green vegetables. A garden tour on June 20 evaluated projects, with ten mothers and one girl visiting homes. A June 23 scrap iron drive sent five pick-up loads to Katz in Marion, followed by a park picnic and swimming.
The Madison Jolly Janes 4 H Club met at Judy Denison s home with eight members two leaders three mothers and three guests. They discussed tour stops in Davenport and set a clinic garden tour for July 10. Kathleen Davis demonstrated cookies and Judy Denison with Margaret Davis did an ice cream demo. They traveled from Wyoming on June 21 at 8 am visiting Iowana Farms Bettendorf Tejuany Park Davenport Peter Pan Bakery Annie Witmier home Little Bit of Heaven with drivers Dorothy Denison Bernice Eichhorn and Harriet Ehlers.
Carla Folkers, county president for girls, impressed workers and the KWWL-TV program director with a decorated Swedish treat. The event showcased her foods and nutrition project work as a representative sample.
The first 4 H camp hosted 76 boys and featured girls and boys officers as group leaders for discussions nature study and crafts. Mary Ellen Jones assisted as song leader craft teacher and tumbling instructor while parents supported with on time drop offs and pick ups. Builders members learned outdoor cookery and patience during outdoor meals.
In Readlyn a 16 month old boy Jeffrey Risse drowned after entering a farm stock tank on his parents property. Local authorities investigated the incident and offered condolences to the family.
Jones County hosts of Massachusetts 4 H Club exchange to meet at 8 p.m. at the Farm Bureau Building. Jerry Parsons says the gathering will acquaint host families with exchange activities and announce each guest’s name. Massachusetts guests arrive by bus Wednesday afternoon July 18 and depart July 26.
Monticello residents Mr. and Mrs Cecil Goettsch hosted guests from Middletown Pa and Monticello for a wedding in Waterloo on June 30. The bride Miss Nancy Heldridge is the daughter of Mrs Goettsch's cousin. Mr and Mrs F I Byerly of Lewiston Mont were guests at Allan Fairbanks home on June 29 with dinner Wednesday evening includes Jay Condit Thelma Clark Joyce and Rex Martinsen all of Monticello.
