The editorial warns against picking up hitchhikers citing dangers to motorists including injury lawsuits and theft. It notes service members use pickup points but urges drivers to avoid unknown riders to protect themselves and their property. It argues kindness to strangers can backfire and urges buses or trains for travel.
The piece cites Planes periodical noting utilities aviation growth from the late 1940s to today. It argues private planes dominate miles flown and that utility aircraft shape business operations, pipeline patrols, agricultural spraying, and training. Also mentions Dr Spock quote on infant smiling and a jab at narrow roads replaced by broad highways.
A 1950s Iowa series updates model ordinances created by the State University of Iowa and the League of Iowa Municipalities. Twenty six new models cover dog licensing curfews beer sales sign regulation and more. Local officials are urged to tailor them to conditions.
The annual 4 H tour started June 9 at 7 30 am from the Goedken farm. A club judging contest followed with top junior scorers Clarence Goedken Loras Soppe Jackie Kintzle and Mark Beckmann and senior leaders Marcus Lawrence Raymond Gogel Donald Lawrence and Bernard Goedken. A sad lunch was held at noon at St Joseph school.
The HHE club met at Sharon Martinson's home on June 3 with Cathy Craig and co host Judy Schneider presiding. Shirley Hanken Janet White Judy Schneider and Dixie Hanken led talks and demonstrations during the business meeting.
The Madison Merry Maids met at Janet Steuri s home on June 2 to plan Silver Tea committees and discuss Rally day 4 H camp and fundraising. Committees were named for refreshments invitations and other tasks and a June 1 meeting at Kathleen Dir ks home planned a picnic with Catlett family entertainment. Demonstrations and talks by Sally Janice and Kathy Catlett highlighted the session.
Hale Wapsie Boys 4 H club met on June 20 with Hale Wapsie Boys Volores and Ivan Strong hosting. The group agreed to pay half the gas bill and Marion Cruise was named delegate to the Ames short course. A club tour started June 26 with a picnic at Holmes and camp registrations planned then.
June 2 club gathering at Sharon Mayberry residence selected Dreaming and Creed girls for Rally Day plans and discussed arrangements.
The Oxford Livewires met June 6 at the Methodist church with Joe Barth presiding. The July 4 gathering was moved to the 141th. A club tour was rescheduled to June 14 and county fair demonstrations were led by Ken Hodgden John Burhop Joe Barth and Steve Koranda.
Joyce and Joann Vacek hosted a June meeting of the Oxford Happy Hustlers. They planned an ice cream social with the Livewire Lassies on June 29 and a garden tour for June 24. Vonnie Rae Benischek was elected vice-president, replacing Nancy Volk, with demonstrations by Mona Kay Benhart Patty Benhart Carol Benhart Joyce Vacek and Carol Murray Pat Murray and Sharon McCreight. Joann Vacek led the music.
The regular annual club tour of projects began in June with the Martello Boys 4-H group. Members traveled to showcase livestock, crops, and crafts, visiting multiple farms and fairs along the route.
The home of Billy Schley hosted a club critique of 19 baby beeves, three lambs, and 13 market litters. Jerry Parsons offered the boys helpful suggestions on improving their projects.
Jackson Beavers 4-H club toured on Friday June 3 with 30 members and guests. Jerry Parsons joined the group to inspect member projects. A picnic dinner followed at the Monticello fair grounds.
The annual Castle Grove Royal Rangers outing began at 8:30 a.m. at William Lubben farm. Thirty-six members and parents visited thirty stops to view members projects. A baby beef class was judged at Delays. Jerry Parsons spoke on 4 H boys camp and shirt sizes were taken. A picnic followed with boys and dads playing softball.
At the June meeting plans were finalized for the local Achievement show scheduled on July 27. Presentations and demonstrations were led by Jean Eilers, Carla Folkers, Andy Hoffman, and Phyllis Hayen.
Sue Wright presided at the June 2 meeting at Susan Houstman’s home. Committees for Rally Day were appointed with demonstrations and talks by Doris Darrow Sandra Levsen Bonnie Wigger Linda Sharon Glenda Guhl and Diane Rutenbeck.
The Clay Busy Bees 4-H club met at Jerilyn Jansen home on Monday June 20 with ten members present. Members answered why they should freeze foods, a bake sale raised $26, and Jerilyn Jansen demonstrated a one egg one bowl cake. Alice Larkey reported on the Ames 4-H convention, Roseann Larkey talked about freezer preparation, and the pledge was recited. Lunch was served by the hostess and guests, and several members were enrolled for the 4-H girls summer camp at Monticello park June 30 to July 2.
Panthers 4 H club members toured Kent Ridge farms and a Kent Feed plant near Muscatine on a Wednesday. They were hosted at noon for dinner and treated to a boat ride on the Mississippi before returning home. Chaperones included Cletus Goedken Rufus Hanken Wilfred Kremer John Wacker and Kent Feed field man.
The Prairie Hill Be Natural and Prairie Pals 4-H clubs met June 21 at Prairie burg parish hall to plan summer garden care and a garden tour. Twenty-one members eight mothers and one guest attended as roll call featured short talks on garden care. The tour starts 7 45 a m at Cletus Goedken home on June 27 with gifts for top judges and presenting leaders.
The June 13 meeting at Doris Hall featured yeast sweet roll demonstrations by mothers Mrs. Vincent Donovan and Mrs. Paul Gerdes along with Doris Hall and other members. Garden tours are set for June 21 and 23 visiting multiple homes with Helen Tucker and Florence Carthers judging gardens.
The Madison Jolly Janes 4-H club met June 24 at Judy Denison to arrange a July 8 morning tour of Monticello factories followed by a picnic dinner and swimming. They also planned a program for the Best Yette picnic on July 10 and a scrap and paper drive to boost the treasury. The centennial float was named 100 Year of Progress. Members gave talks and demonstrations led by Rita Griswold and others. Delores French reported on Girls State convention in Ames. Judy Denison led recreation.
Regular meeting of the Hale Wapsie Wanderers at Carol Coleman's on June 23 outlined an August tour of the Stanwood Locker plant. July 1 garden tour and August 5 ice cream social were scheduled. Phyllis Darrow joined. Sharon Broderson and Donna Woods named senior demonstration team. Carol and Carmen Robertson named junior team. Donna Woods reported on the state convention. Carol Coleman demonstrated freezing peas and Sharon Brodersen spoke on table courtesy.
Youth Assistant Lyle Mackey reports on 4-H short course visits in Allamakee county with former Jones county member. Harlan Helgens Janet Zimmerman and Carol Vacek led training sessions for leaders and youth, showcasing electric motor projects and muffins. Plans for state fair exhibitions and remaining camp reservations are highlighted with premium book availability.
Judging workout at Wilson and Co in Cedar Rapids precedes a Prairie Hill Prairie Pals garden tour. A late noon cookout featured camp fire stew arranged by Julianne and Frances Holub and family. Garden tours visited Grace Kromminga and Luciele Blokm homes with ongoing home grounds projects and new strawberry beds. Evonne and Mary Reth show interest in repeating the project. Tiered beds of ever bearing strawberries were noted at Bonita Larkey and at Andria and Adria Meeks, Green Field Good Luck club members.
