Robert Dale Owen died at Lake George on the 24th. Born in 1804 at New Lanark Scotland he was son of Robert Owen founder of the New Harmony Communist Society. A Democratic politician and diplomat he helped organize the Smithsonian Institution and later became known as a Spiritualist writer and author.
A crowded Iowa Republican Convention in Des Moines saw James Wilson preside as Beardsley nominated Gear amid fierce debates over temperance and policy endorsements. Protests against The Policy erupted, but the platform was postponed, and final approval favored cautious party unity.
