Seventy five of ninety nine county auditors report to the state auditor for equalization showing a net real estate value rise since 1899 of about 14 million dollars statewide with railways up some five percent. The state board of review begins mid July and ends by early August. The article also notes calls for more railway crossing regulation, a new library system at the State University, and salary readjustments across state institutions including farm managers and hospital staff.

Louis Busse, a Butler county farmer, and his hired man Henry Snider were arrested for the murder of Busse wife in a six month marriage. A partial confession suggests Busse struck the wife in the head fracturing her skull cut her throat covered her body with a feather bed and pillows poured kerosene and set the mass on fire. The feathers refused to burn and a neighbor extinguished the blaze after the body was badly burned.
Two members of the Brady gang were caught while trying to break into Johnson's general merchandise store in Ventura. One man was shot in the abdomen and likely fatally wounded. he refused to reveal his name or home. The other identified himself as Smith. They had stolen shoes, were armed with revolvers and skeleton keys, and Smith carried a large sum of money.
Washington weather bureau notes for Iowa describe ample rainfall aiding growth with rapid development and generally clean fields. Areas east of section one experience delays from heavy showers, pastures and meadows improving with late rains, oats spring wheat and barley performing well though below normal, apples and plums showing fruiting.
The Congregational church of Grinnell voted unanimously to drop former professor George D. Herron from its church rolls, completing the process to remove him from the church. Herron, once a professor of applied Christianity, is now formally ousted from the congregation.
Charles Ungs a farmer reports hog cholera in the northern Dubuque county. In a few days he lost 97 hogs and pigs out of 112 and expects more deaths at home. Other farmers are afflicted and alarm is felt as the disease is said to be more virulent than ever before.
Mrs Louise Busse living seven miles southwest of Greene was found dead in her house after a fire. Neighbors reported heavy burns on the body and kerosene and feathers scattered across the floor, suggesting murder before the blaze. She had married recently.
The First National Bank of Lehigh will begin with a $25,000 capital. In Sioux City cattle brought six dollars per hundredweight, the highest price in ten years, as 63 head averaging 1 424 pounds were bid by Armour.
The state historical department gained 86 letters and reports by Govs Lucas and Chambers while in charge of Indian affairs. Curator Aldrich calls the collection a major find, detailing agents traders and inoculation efforts in Iowa. Congress facilitated copies and return of originals from Washington after long archival work.
The sixth annual general court of the Society of Colonial Wars in Iowa met in Iowa City with a busi ness session and banquet. Officers elected for the next year include Governor George Arthur Goodell of Cedar Rapids and Deputy Governor G B E MacLean of Iowa City.
Lucas County establishes a historical society in Chariton within the public library. Ex Lieutenant Governor W S Dungan elected president and Margaret Brown named curator. Board includes Rt. Haselquist and S H Mallory. The society invites citizens to donate newspapers books records and photos to preserve Lucas County history for future generations.
Federal Judge Shiras in Dubuque decides Everett v Rock Rapids school district. He rules that $25 000 bonds issued in 1879 are enforceable for $6 875 plus ten years of interest totaling $15 087 under the state constitution limits on municipal indebtedness. also the 1882 issue may be enforced. The decision is landmark and widely noted.
Thousands gathered in the public park as congressman Hauzen and Dr Hutchins of Des Moines Dr Troy of Hampton Maj Metzger G A R Iowa department commander and others spoke at the initiatory exercises in Mason City for the corner stone laying of the National Memorial University.
Joseph Larocea, son of Antonio Larocea from Alexandrine del Carreto Italy, working with a 30 Italian gang on the Great Western section at Melbourne, died after sunstrike. Born in Italy in 1882. His parents are reported to be lying and worth about $50,000.
