The Jones County Temperance Alliance met June 27 1884 at Center Junction with Pres Truman of the Presbyterian church in charge. Delegates discussed enforcing new prohibitory laws, planned a central organization for Jones County, and elected officers including J B Wherry president and J B Stillman secretary. Subscriptions raised 177 for work toward a $1000 fund, and resolutions urged strict law enforcement and citizen support.
The editors are informed that St Martin’s church will host a grand celebration at Chew’s grove on the fourth with Hon I W Baldwin as day’s orator. The Baptist congregation plans an old fashioned basket picnic at Taylor’s grove. Miss Clara Huntington returns from Cedar Falls after schooling. Joseph Carter of Savannah Missouri says a fifty cent bottle of Chamber Jain's Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy sold at the local drug store did his mother more good than any other medicine. The remedy sold for 25 and 50 cents per bottle by all druggists. A female thief disguised as a man was detected yesterday when a cop saw her pass a saloon without looking in and then linger before an ice cream sign.
