Wind storm lashes Monticello area and weed pest found
A wind storm yanked trees in the Monticello area. Ed Meier reports a new weed pest teasel has appeared in Jones county via wreaths and bouquets, found in six cemeteries including Sacred Heart and Oakwood, likely from Cedar Rapids suppliers.

Storms Leave Monticello Damaged Homes and Farms
High winds of 50 mph struck Monticello Sunday night. A large tree toppled onto a newspaper car, and a parking lot concrete was damaged. A porch roof, a smoke stack, and several trees were blown down. Farms northeast of town suffered damage including a demolished corn crib and overturned hog house. Wires fell, lights dimmed, and the fire department assisted Iowa Electric crews. The storm path cut through southwest Monticello and across nearby yards before rain followed on Monday.

Monticello Firemen Respond to Two Blazes
Monticello Volunteer Fire department answered a 9:15 a.m. Tuesday call to the Paul Beckman farm home ten miles west of Monticello where electrical wiring shorted starting a fire in the upper story. A second call came from Sand Springs at 2 p.m. Monday for a grass fire behind the Catholic church that spread out of control.

Onslow Beef Barbecue and Rodeo Set for July 8

Summer recreation program for retarded children begins Friday
The Jones County Association for Retarded Children sponsors a summer program for children and adolescents starting Friday July 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Friday for eight weeks.
