Readers recall a correction over a 1954 county clerk figures error in Anamosa. The piece notes a mix up where 528 births were misread as deaths, plus barber shop talk on snow, weather, and local 4-H plans with a meeting set for Feb. 3 at the Wacker home.
David Randall and Harold Clark were welcomed as new members at the Martelle Boys 4-H club meeting on December 1. Leader Louis Strothers led a discussion on animal breeding. A January 5 potluck supper inviting parents was held with hosts Dean Ricklefs and Bernie and Don Bunce.
Stan James and Don Bunce report on a 4-H meeting where Keith Reed played accordion numbers. Jerry Parsons, county youth assistant, attended and discussed changes to market litter project rules.
The Morley 3M Club met January 3 at Antioch. The group distributed inserts for record books and Marvin Von Sprecken demonstrated firearm safety. Members discussed feed nutrients while Frances Sievers and Connie Sievers handled refreshments. At the December 14 meeting Carol Greenawald Rita Russell Lois Kuchenbaker and Margaret Shumaker presented demonstrations on seven foods table setting meal planning and cooked cereals. Marilyn Hoppe led the business meeting. Lois Stulte organized recreation and Christmas gifts were exchanged.
Washington Tigers members Dave and Pat Hughes hosted the December 30 gathering. The agenda included discussion on keeping of record books and related administrative matters.
The January meeting of Lovell Lions 4 H club was held at the home of Billy Wilcox Jan 6. Members discussed upcoming community projects and welcomed new participants.
The Oxford Livewires met January 3 at the Methodist church with hosts George Foy Eugene and Gae Ann Luckstead. Eugene Luckstead presided as members discussed the Massachusetts Iowa 4-H exchange program and a livestock nutrient talk. Seventeen members weighed 32 calves December 29.
Regular meeting at Parish hall on Jan. 5 with Floyda Merritt leading. Members voted to donate to the March of Dimes. A January bread making workshop is planned. A Christmas toy thank you card to John McDonald hospital was read. Talks and demonstrations by Janice and Jane Nagel. Darlene Plouer, Nancy McVay and discussions led by Mrs. John Wacker and Mrs. Leo Holub.
Luciel Blohm led a discussion on cuts of meat at the Prairie Hill Be Natural club meeting on January 6. Freda Kromminga spoke about cereals and the role of eggs in the diet. Grace Kromminga chaired the business portion of the gathering.
A Hopkinton music recital was hosted at Mervin Blanchard’s home with the town’s music director presenting piano accordion organ and voice pieces. Students’ mothers attended as guests and thirty people total were served refreshments after the performances.
Paul Lumpa and Dale Lange of the Monticello Implement Co and Norman Lund of Wyoming spent last week at Des Moines attending the Oliver school for mechanics.
An elderly couple debate pity for the Wild Indian while a storm rages outside. Gram mocks two painted men stealing their cattle and trinkets, Gramp writes a bark poem, and a reflective mood follows with rain and memory. The narrator concludes with a note about dreams and waking.
4-H members weigh 176 beeves this year up 36 from last year. Wayne Master Farmers hosted a chili supper for 65 boys and their dads. Talks on livestock by Helgens Hagen Heerens and Heeren. Junior feeders project start moved to March 1. all weighed and branded by then. A girls garden leader training school is planned next week. Massachusetts exchange program applications for girls are late. deadline February. boys receive applications at February meeting due March 1. Mr and Mrs Rickels and Mr and Mrs Hacke of Cascade travel to Florida and the Bahamas. Mr Brinkman and mother visit Oxford Junction.
