Larry Otten joins the fourth grade while Keith and Braddie Dirks are away on vacation trips to the South.
The January 19 to 25 meal plan compiled by Miss Nicoll lists daily offerings. Monday features lean soup apple salad egg salad sandwiches and milk. Tuesday scalloped corn cabbage carrot salad peanut butter sandwiches milk and peach sauce. Wednesday meat balls candied sweet potatoes bread and butter milk baked apple. Thursday creamed potatoes and ch enies bread and butter milk. Friday chicken supreme mashed potatoes bread and butter milk and apple.
At a recent meeting Miriam Young and Stuart Sutherland reported on safety patrol upgrades and fire drill practices from other Iowa councils. A statewide Iowa Student Council gathering is set for January 24 in Ames with two delegates from our council.

Names mentioned include Jane DeShaw, Marilyn Tobiason Behave, Don Robinson, Irma Bohlken, Jimmy Conley, Joyce Kink, Jean Barnts, Paul Grossheim, Rose Stadtmueller, Lois Caspers, Stuart Sutherland, Rodney Rieken, Mr. Cram, David Cox, Richard Schone, and Miss Smith. Individual pledges cover behavior, study habits, safety, and personal goals.
A strange, humorous illness sweeps Monti High as seniors Vera Null and Lucretia Fairbanks contract what a doctor calls a disease of love. Teachers Miss Humke and Miss Sievers fall ill as gossip and joy spread. The odd case ends with engagement rings and marriages.
Students endured a tense end to term tests as last minute quips and confusion gave way to the dreaded moment of announcing semester averages. The mood remained hopeful yet anxious for results.

The Youth Rally gathered 70 attendees at Onslow Presbyterian Church on Sunday January 11. Howard Leinen was elected president of the Jones County Youth Inter-Church Council representing Ons low Presbyterian. Four vice presidents were chosen from Anamosa Monticello Morley and Onslow. Marilee Kennedy and Beverly Mead were elected vice presidents and secretary treasurer respectively. An Astrurian club meeting led by Mrs Marvin Handwardson drew 21 members with devotions by Mrs John Kennedy and a book review by Mrs D J Wasson. Plans were made for a bingo party with a dessert coffee fundraiser set for Tuesday January 27 at the Community Hall.

Cpl. Frank Fitzsimmons son of Mr and Mrs Roy Mellor of Monticello has gone for discharge and return home from the Eighth Army in Osaka Japan. He joined Sept 20 1946 trained at Fort Bliss Texas and departed for overseas duty Dec 5 1946 with the 25th Infantry Division Tropic Lightning. He attended Monticello High School.
An act of Congress dated June 2 1924 declares all American born Indians citizens of the United States whether living on reservations or not.
A hand book for Iowa citizens titled You Are Democracy by Dorothy Schramm is off the press. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Iowa, copies are 25 cents through members. Prof Kurt Porter of SUI lauds the work as containing unique material on Iowa government.
A 7 percent special dividend totaling 11459 is mailed this week to about 600 members in Jones Linn and Benton counties of the National Farm Loan associations served by the Cedar Rapids office Harold B McTavish secretary treasurer said the dividends came from a special payout by the Federal L Bank of Omaha. Directors of the Jones county association include H F Adams president George P Slater vice president Perry L Russell and Olin t R Howie all of Monticello.
