Liberty and the limits of speech in historical view
Worthington Street in The Pagor Book argues liberty of speech is not newly restricted and recalls historical punishments for dissent. It cites 17th century pillories and fines for writers like the creators of the Players Scourge and Robinson Crusoe, noting public support and ironic protests. The piece discusses past punishments of Leigh Hunt, William Cobbett, and Charles Lamb, ending with a reflection on liberty as an iron hand in velvet. An upcoming Garden Short Course is announced.
