A Panora man, A W Gilson, injured himself while moving a car, then walked away unhurt as the vehicle rolled forward. A near Marquette, Iowa, excavation uncovered a possible prehistoric mound builder skull with unique facial features.
Washta in Cherokee county earns the nickname Medicine Hat of Iowa as the state’s coldest point with temperatures of 27 below zero on Friday December 16 and 28 below on December 19. In 1911 Washta set a record of 47 degrees below zero, the lowest Iowa reading to date. A DeWitt produce dealer in Clinton county plans a new 150 by 9 by 11 foot corn crib with 6 000 bushel capacity to store grain until prices rise.
Dallas county paid 890 for petit jurors fees during the November term though only one jury case was tried and it lasted briefly. Delays in settlements led to an unusually large number of postponed cases.
Jurors were dismissed three times and recalled repeatedly, only to be told their services were not needed. Judge Dingwell ended the matter and moved trial actions to the January term. Fees and traveling expenses were paid as though the term had been busy. Treasurer F. C. Gengston cashed warrants totaling $890.
Plymouth county farmer Charles Sicfke reports a 21 row ear of Reid yellow dent corn with a single extra row that runs from end to middle and reappears on the opposite side, making 21 rows overall. Other notes include a 15 year old injured in a ditch accident near Tripoli and unusually large ears shown by Elmer Stewart of Adair county.
Davis County residents along Salt Creek township report ice drifting down the Des Moines river on Christmas Day as water rose to six feet above normal. Howard Wilson recalls an unprecedented rise for the season and widespread overflows along the bankfull river.
Sac County’s only centenarian William L Hewitt aged 100 celebrates December 22 at his 160 acre Sac City farm. He remains active handling chores and housework proving resilience after wars and economic hardship. In other news Leland Donnelly 11 drowned on Black Hawk creek Waterloo, his body recovered Friday night.
