Mechanicsville youth Charles Henry Sublette 19 faces larceny charges for five April break-ins in Olin. He is serving 60 days in Cedar county jail for petty larceny and a traffic violation. After sentence he will be taken to Jones county for trial. About $70 cash and two six packs were taken from D X station Mackeys cafe Spot cafe Gordon Hardware and the Royal Blue store.

First robin sighting signals early spring in Scotch Grove
Mrs. Ray Naylor reports the first robin in the Express area on Wednesday Feb 15 in her Scotch Grove yard. Warm days earlier may have tricked the bird, but freezing rain and snow later brought harsh winds as a Midwest blizzard moved through, leaving residents cautious about spring.

Monticello Students to Perform at Northeast Iowa Band Festival
A total of 85 Monticello students in sixth through eighth grade will perform at the instrumental music festival at Mount Vernon on Saturday. Monticello will present 56 solos and 17 small groups for the North East Iowa Band Masters association. Participants will receive blue, red or white ribbons for their performances.

Three Car Crash On Ice Closes Part Of Highway 151
A three car collision on an ice covered highway 151 two miles northeast of Monticello occurred at 9 22 a m last Thursday. Paul Neal Spaight 40 of Cedar Rapids faced two traffic summonses for improper lane usage and driving too fast for conditions. Spaight in a 1965 Chevrolet in the inside lane tried to pass McVay in the creeper lane causing his car to spin off the road. McVay 37 of Monticello braked and crossed into the passing lane, stopping his 1963 Chevrolet after losing control. Osterhaus 25 of Newton approaching from the opposite direction braked and partially lost control hitting McVay from behind and leaving the highway. Estimated damages totaled 1265 with Osterhaus rear right and McVay left front damaged plus Spaight minor damage. Highway Patrolman Tom Toner investigated.

Tragedy in Olin As Train Strikes Car on Track
Francis May Appleby, 24, of Olin, watched helplessly as a train struck her 1961 Ford on a railroad track at 9:27 p.m. Thursday. After stalling on the crossing and futilely trying to start the engine, she exited, attempted to push the car off the track, and was struck while seeking aid nearby.

Collision at West First Street Monticello injures no one
At 9 am Monday two cars collided at the West First and South Maple intersection in Monticello. Ivan L. Raymond 68 Anamosa and Harold J. Postel 36 Monticello drove westbound cars. Postel tried to pass Raymond. Postel’s car owned by Leo Richard Tjaden sustained about 150 dollars damage. Raymond’s car was undamaged. No charges filed.

William Jensen injured in one-car Jones county crash
A 21 year old man William Russell Jensen of Wyoming sustained a bruised chest and knee cuts when his 1965 Oldsmobile left a county road five miles southwest of Olin at 3 a.m. The vehicle was demolished and Jensen was treated by deputies. In a separate Jones county collision at 5 p.m. east of Anamosa on highway 64 Darrell Schuman and Raymond A Taylor were involved. Schuman’s car was a total loss and Taylor received $800 damage. Taylor was cited for failing to control.
