Legacy Of Forty Years In Monticello's Echoes
Thirty years ago Monticello reflected a busy period with the death of Frank J. Altman of Luxemburg born in 1837. He was buried in the Catholic cemetery after funeral services by Father McCormick. The town also saw Mrs. Clara Shaffer of Scotch Grove die of consumption. The local church dedication cost eight thousand four hundred dollars and was debt free. Ransom M. Calkins rose to assistant general freight agent and later president of the Milwaukee Railway system. Local business shifts included Joe Meyer purchasing a blacksmith shop and G B Bishop leaving the Jones County Times. Monticello hosted wrestling under Marquis of Queensbury rules with Ridner winning. Other notable events included marriages, obituaries, and the first free rural mail route in Castle Grove township.
