Buttermilk Improves Hog Rations in Iowa Experiments
G W Glatfelter of the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station reports several trials on feeding buttermilk to young hogs. In four trials with 2 to 10 pounds of buttermilk per head daily, 100 pounds of buttermilk replaced 5 pounds of corn and 6 pounds of meat meal. The tests used free choice corn and forage compared with a ration including buttermilk. Pricing corn at 76 cents a bushel or 27.14 dollars per ton contextualizes cost effects.
