Wastington December 4 The comptroller of the currency reports that 119 banks were organized and 158 suspended during the year 1893. Total national banks in operation 8,796 with capital stock 605,558,120 and resources 3,100,565,281. The report notes mass withdrawals and cautious lending as causes of a low business mood and recommends bids for currency and bank reforms.
New York clothiers King & Co and Cohn, Ball & Co at 627 and 629 Broadway suspend again unable to meet the second payment on their compromise. After previous liabilities over 250000 they agreed to forty cents on the dollar with 10 percent due at three, six, nine and twelve months.
New York reports a personal friend of J. J. Van Alen reveals letters showing his refusal to serve as ambassador to Italy. Van Alen acknowledges a campaign contribution but denies motives.
