Maquoketa Valley Bond Issue Fails for Seventh Time
Maquoketa Valley district again fails to pass a $656,000 high school bond. The measure gained 905 yes to 819 no but did not reach the 60 percent requirement. Supporters were strongest in Hopkinton and Buck Creek, while Delhi Earlville and Oneida opposed. The project has been on the ballot since January 1960.

Fire Destroys Barn on River Farm Near Hopkinton
A 38 by 100 foot barn on the River farm between Delhi and Hopkinton owned by Mr and Mrs Cletus Hargrafen burned Saturday evening. Delhi fire company could not save the structure. The blaze destroyed 5 000 bales hay 1 000 bales straw 2 500 bushels shelled corn 500 bushels oats a calf and several young pigs and other items. The Hargrafens were away at the Delhi school election returning home about 6 pm to find the barn afire and several children at home.

Thieves Loot Clark’s Seven-States Station in Monticello
Thieves broke into Clark's Seven-States station in Monticello on Thursday night and stole a safety box with about 35 dollars in cash 300 dollars in non negotiable securities and several hundred dollars in worth less checks. Entry was gained by breaking the glass door and unlocking from inside. Police and the Jones county sheriff investigated.
