Strike Avoided As Railroads Agree To Prevent Eastern Walkout
Eastern railroads faced a near general strike after conductors and trainmen demanded a 20 percent wage raise. A settlement avoided a rail stoppage that would disrupt mails and produce for 50 million people east of the Mississippi. The Erdman act arbitration was discussed as the roads refused proposed terms. The affected lines include Boston and Albany, Baltimore and Ohio, Erie, Pennsylvania and many others.
