In Monticello a 16 year old girl and a friend wrote detailed letters on civil defense for the nation. The editor cannot publish unsigned letters but invites the young writer to identify herself to speak in the editorial column.
From April 3 to August 18 1961 the Monticello Express published 829 news photos while the two Anamosa newspapers combined posted 560. The Express asserts the rubber yardstick claim was false and urges corrections to readers.
In a letter to the editor dated August 17 1961 a reader commends Glen Lambert for renovating the local theatre both morally and physically. The writer notes earlier concerns over unsuitable films and praises current lineup with several full houses and no standing room. The letter urges continued support for Lambert and the cinema.

Plus courthouse cornerstone ceremonies planned and timberland fire in August Ladehoff farm area.
Local church listings show Rev. A Morris at First Congregational. St. Peter's Episcopal open for morning prayer. Evangelical Reform not holding services. St Matthew Lutheran with 8 and 10 30 a m worship. Sacred Heart Catholic with multiple masses. Also notes historic items about Monticello Electric, Neanderthal cave work, Kasper family relocation, Jones County Fair opening August 30 and county homes construction progress.
There is speculation about space and the universe's construction. The Washington DC Rio Aerospace Dept. addresses questions about why a system would be built with an apparent dead end or unnecessary stairs.
