Market lamch show honors Mark Hartwig of Hale as top showman on Monday. Birth notices list a July August period with several Monticello Cascade Olin and AnandaIe VA and Cedar Rapids births including Janeen Ellen and Craig Robert with family details.
Six Jones county 4-Hers won dairy show championships at the Great Jones County Fair in Monticello including top honors for Larry Volk in Jersey Tom Atchison in Guernsey Steve Kyarsgaard in Brown Swiss David Gamble in Milking Shorthorn and Jim Dean in Ayrshire. Reserve honors went to Denny Volk Donald Etten Marjorie Novak Dale Zimmerman Ron Wright and Scott Slater across several breeds.
The report states Ralph Albaugh is appointed sheriff with Larry Himes as deputy. A new municipal airport project advances after a $58,118 FAA grant to Monticello, with state funds sought and local escrow of about $23,000. The Hankens farm site along highway 38 is planned for a DC-3 capable strip.
Sacred Heart schools in Monticello will begin the 1963-64 year on Wednesday August 28 with a full day of classes. Enrollment totals 355, up 20 from last year, including 248 in elementary and 107 in high school. High school class counts are freshmen 31, sophomores 26, juniors 25, seniors 5.
Six candidates filed nominating papers for the Jones county board of education. Leslie Balster seeks re election from district one. Edward H. Cox and Kenneth Howie vie for district two. At large candidates are Max Specht Eleanor Walters and Herman Helgens with Specht and Helgens seeking different posts. Incumbent at large Helgens is not running. Election date is Sept. 9.
Monticello Community schools announce workshops for teachers on Thursday and Friday, August 29 and 30, with the school year starting Tuesday, September 3. Supt Boyd Shannon notes lunch prices rise to 30 cents for junior and senior high students and outlines the five day registration schedule by grade and elementary letter ranges.
Ribbons were awarded to 516 entries in the girls 4-H home furnishings garden and expense account divisions at the Great Jones County Fair. Judges named several outstanding entries across blue and red ratings in multiple categories with 26 home furnishings 459 entries outstanding and two garden and two expense accounts likewise noted.
Ralph Albaugh of Anamosa is appointed Jones county sheriff to fill the vacancy from Lewis Dreibelbis resignation. Larry Himes of Monticello becomes deputy sheriff. Albaugh has served as deputy since February 1962 and previously ran photography studios in Anamosa and Mechanicsville. Himes, Monticello police since 1961, is married with three children and active in local clubs and church. Sweepstakes prizes at the Great Jones County Fair awarded to Mrs. Henry Wieferich Farley and Emma Safely Springville for garden products and art. Exhibits remain in the Youth Center until 4 pm Saturday, flowers removed Thursday.
