The Des Moines meeting of Republican delegates nominated Hon. Jos. G. Hutchison for governor after a prolonged contest with Hull and Wheeler factions. Hutchison secured broad support and was chosen on the twenty fifth ballot, with Wheeler and Hull supporters largely shifting to him. Hutchison, born 1840 in Pennsylvania, is a veteran lawyer and former state senator noted for Ways and Means leadership.
