Anamosa and nearby report a rash of robberies over the past week. A companion with Bayles carried a larger sum, about 100 dollars. In Newport, Jake Main encountered three armed highwaymen and 64 dollars was taken from him while his car was halted in a narrow stretch. One robber fled in Mumn’s car and disappeared. No arrests reported and trackers found a small foot impression suggesting a woman’s involvement. A separate burglary at Murphy & Brady’s store failed when a night watch could not muster help in time. Another burglary occurred at Mrs. Respaugh’s residence but was interrupted before any loot was taken. The town police and sheriff are investigating, with no suspects yet identified.
