Reports from San Juan Puerto Rico describe a devastating cyclone with hundreds dead. Ponce and Humacao suffer immense destruction as water scarcity, looting, and hunger threaten survivors. aid is being organized and ships laden with rice and beans are dispatched.
Victoria report details shipwrecks off Western Australia. The Carlisle Castle from Liverpool to Freemantle wrecked near Rockingham with 11 drowned. The City of York from San Francisco to Fremantle ran aground at Rothness Island on July 12, carrying 744000 feet redwood lumber. 11 lives lost.
Washington reports Maj. Gen. Otis will keep supreme command in the Philippines. If he asks to step down Maj. Gen. Lawton would be designated as his successor. High authorities say the president and Secretary Root decided this at Lake Champlain after lengthy discussions with Gen. Miles.
In Cleveland on August 12 an explosion rocked a streetcar on Euclid Avenue near Case Street. The car bound east carried 25 passengers, none injured. Several women attempted to jump but were restrained by bystanders. the wreckage required a wrecker to clear the line.
Manila reports Gen. Macs Arthur’s forces cover five miles in five hours and six miles by two o’clock along the railway, resting near Angeles three miles from the town, left as northern base. San Fernando garrison of 600 men. Casualties total 30 to 40. Rebel losses around Calulet estimated at 100 killed and 300 to 400 wounded. The Iowa regiment tallies 30 slain. U.S. losses five killed, 31 wounded.
A Pioneer Press report details a severe hailstorm across Fargo and Ada regions causing total losses of thousands of acres in Cass Traill and nearby counties. Estimates say 2 million bushels of wheat lost and damage exceeding 1 million dollars with 25 to 100 percent crop losses. The storm tracked from Erie to Red River, crippling grain across the northern area.
Dr Walter Manning Barrows of Greenwich Connecticut died at Mackinac Island after receiving telegrams about his Belmont Sloane marriage ceremony. Rev Dr Josiah Strong cited heavy misrepresentation and criticism as factors affecting Barrows mind sleep and vitality, a view echoed in Greenwich as a likely cause of death.

In Denver on August 14 a recruit named Wellington C. Llewellyn of Company L Thirty fourth volunteer infantry shot and killed Officers Tom Clifford and W E Griffith after a disturbance at Louis Klipfel saloon. Two accomplices were captured. Llewellyn fled toward the viaduct, pursued by officers, with a nationwide manhunt underway. A reward is offered dead or alive and lynching talk faded.
An Aug 14 riot disrupted Londonderry during a Protestant Derry relief anniversary celebration. A Belfast 98 club excursion of 400 was barred entry, nationalist bands sparked stone throwing, police were attacked, the riot act read, and the mayor summoned the garrison.
Paris august 14 leaders of the Royalist youth and the Patriotic and Anti Semitic leagues were arrested after a magisterial inquiry. Deroulede and Marcel Habert face charges of inciting soldiers to disobedience and plans to seize government by force. Police guard league offices as new arrests follow.
Solomon Quinter shot and killed his wife Annie 48 and her alleged lover Edward H. Kitzmiller 28 in Reading Pennsylvania early Sunday. He held vigil for hours then fired. after the double homicide he surrendered and was committed to prison.

Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania August 9 The Glenn Lyon miners 1200 of Susquehanna Coal join the Nanticoke strikers bringing regional outcry to 3800 and closing mines. Company official says Schuylkill Shamokin collieries unaffected. Exeter Babylon and Keystone pits still idle making 5500 miners on strike.
Newport News sees the yellow fever outbreak nearly finished as Hampton quarantine ends and Norfolk quarantine to be lifted. The tally reaches 43 cases with 11 deaths. 12 discharged, and 20 convalescents still hospitalized at the soldiers' home.
The national convention of shoe manufacturers adopted a general price increase of ten to twenty-five cents. They formed a permanent organization and adjourned. Manufacturers say consumer prices may not rise, but retailers will likely absorb the added cost from their profits.
