Battleship Iowa To Be Used As Moving Target In Atlantic Fleet Test
The battleship Iowa at Philadelphia Navy Yard will be remotely controlled and unmanned as it serves as a moving target for Atlantic fleet superdreadnoughts in Chesapeake Bay this summer. Smoke screens cover the ship as guns and radio control simulate battle conditions, while two Iowa boilers shift to oil to enable full underway operation. The test, one of the era’s first moving-target trials, aims to refine gunnery under battlelike range changes before the vessel sinks, joining the fate of the old Texas and other retired ships.
