Frank F. Merriam, a Delaware county incumbent, won the county convention vote 80 to 45 over Haeberlee who sought the state treasurer nomination. Merriam’s supporters say the bid against him aimed to block his statewide bid. the outcome keeps Merriam poised for the state auditor race.
The Marion meeting nominated Treichler by acclamation after a lengthy balloting sequence among Cedar Rapids Linn and Jones counties. Kepler Harman and Powell vied for renomination with Treichler ultimately receiving 28 votes to Kepler 16 and Harman 14.
The proposal requires Spain to surrender sovereignty over Cuba and Puerto Rico and adjacent lands and to withdraw its forces. The United States would take a coaling station on one Ladrone Island and form a joint commission to decide future possession of the Philippines. Pending a decision Manila and its bay would be held under military government.
From the Wyoming Journal comes word the Wyoming Cornet band will perform at the Woodman picnic in Monticello on August 11 and then a three day engagement with the Monticello fair management. The band won the bid against others, bought new uniforms, and is training weekly to play refined music.
Last evening Mrs Oberton and her brother-in-law traveling to meetings were overtaken by Prof A J Jones and Miss Clara Sherman west of St John church. After multiple passes near grave yard hill they collided in front of Fred Rummel s residence. Mrs Oberton fell from the buggy but injuries were minor and she was treated at Dr White s office before returning home.
Mr P M Wallace aged 71 died after drinking carbolic acid by mistake at his Anamosa home. He awakened from sleep at eleven, drank the acid, and could not be pumped due to throat burns. Survived by wife Mrs Giltrap a son and daughter and a stepson Robert Giltrap. Funeral at Catholic church Saturday 10 am with Ancient Order of Hibernians in charge.
From the Iowa Capital report Hon Frank Merriam secured a sweeping victory in his home county on Saturday. The opposition collapsed as straw candidates failed to threaten the nomination. The episode signals a rejection of using local races to block Merriam from state auditorship.
Iowa Climate and Crop Bulletin notes last week brought relief to crops suffering from extreme heat and drought. Fair showers and cooler, dewy conditions aided corn potatoes grass and vegetables while wind damage in many areas was offset by the beneficial rains.
