Public Schools Open After Labor Day In Monticello
Monticello Community schools will open Tuesday September 3 for the 1963 64 academic year with a full day of classes. Registration for all grades runs August 26 to 29 with schedules by last name. Sacred Heart schools also announced openings for August 28.

Kenneth Weber to Teach Social Studies at Monticello High
Kenneth Weber was hired to teach social studies at Monticello Community High School for 1963 64. Superintendent Boyd Shannon announced the appointment, noting Weber replaces Don Marston who resigned for a Rockford NL post. Weber is a Calumet native, a State University of Iowa alumnus on Nile Kinnick scholarship, has coached and taught at Sutherland for four years, and previously taught at Pella. He is pursuing a master’s in economics at SUI and is married with two children. The second grade position formerly held by Mrs. Marston remains to be filled.

Ridiculous Days Set by Monticello Merchants Aug 9 10
Monticello stores plan their fourth annual Ridiculous Days on Friday and Saturday August 9 and 10. A children and pets parade debuts with 80 dollars in prizes for all entrants under 13. The event features bargains, sidewalk sales Saturday 2 p.m. to close, and prizes for store staff in funny costumes.

Oxford Jct Horse Show Draws 400 Entries at 11th Annual Event
A large crowd attended the 11th annual Jones County Saddle Club horse show co sponsored by Legion Post 473 of Oxford Jct. More than 400 entries came from Wisconsin Minnesota Illinois California and Iowa with 350 horses shown. Judge Chet Noble of Clarence and ringmaster Herb Saunders of West Liberty led the event. Linda Rehmke won a pony during the evening drawing.

Monticello to Host Foreign Exchange Student for 1963-64
Helen Doubou, 17, of Corfu Greece, named Monticello's AFS exchange student for the 1963-64 year, will live with the Louis Morf family and attend Monticello Community High School. She is the fourth AFS student in Monticello, following Karin Dickel, Finn Skjaerlund, and Solomon Carpio.

Summer Band to Present Final Concert Tonight
The final summer band concert of the season is set for tonight at eight in the band shell in south Monti cello. It opens with the junior high band of about 55 seventh and eighth graders and continues with a combined ensemble of the summer and fall high school groups. Selections include Totem Pole concert march Osterling Toccata Erickson Dromenade Anderson and Fandango Perkins. Band director Ray Stumbaugh announced the completed summer schedule of lessons and morning rehearsals. Monday evening rehearsals at 7245 p.m. prepare for fair concerts with special twirler practices at 7 p.m.

Monticello awards 68 thousand in street bids
Contracts totaling 68 147.74 were awarded for Monticello street improvements. Hargrave Construction Co Cedar Rapids won asphalt seal coat and five street pave jobs with 36 126.05. Tri State Paving Dubuque won concrete paving for two streets at 32 021.69. Work begins August 7 with completion September 15 for asphalt and September 30 for concrete.

The International Showtime Circus arrives on Tuesday Aug 20 with animal acts jugglers clowns and balancing feats.
